To be considered for Bloomsburg University's teaching certification program, which is regulated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), you must complete an appropriate undergraduate degree in the area of certification offered by the university: Biology, Chemistry, General Science, Earth and Space Science, Communication, English, Citizenship/History, Mathematics, Spanish, French and German.

A transcript review is required to insure proper credentials and degree are obtained. To start the process you need to apply!

You would be required to pass Praxis II in your area of certification prior to being certified; however, passing Praxis II, PAPA, GMAT, or GRE would satisfy the exam portion of the application process.

Many of the courses are offered in the evening; however, some are late afternoon and a few are available on-line. The program is typically 3 semesters: 12 credits, 12 credits, 9 credits. Student teaching is imbedded in the process; however, that is full time and you can take longer if desired. You can start in any semester as the C & I Program has open enrollment.

If you plan on attending graduate school full-time, you may want to consider applying for a graduate assistantship (GA).

Students also must:

  • possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • obtain current Pennsylvania Qualifying Scores for the Praxis 1: Academic Skills Assessments:

    Session/Test Code:

    • 10710 PPST Reading
    • 20720 PPST Writing
    • 10730 PPST Mathematics (calculators prohibited)
  • submit the results from a current Tuberculosis Screening administered within the last two years.
  • possess professional liability insurance. The policy shall be a minimum of $1,000,000 per claim and $3,000,000 aggregate.

This is a state (PA) requirement that can be satisfied through membership in PSEA.

  • obtain current ACT 34 (Request for Criminal Record Check) and ACT 151 (Child Abuse History Check) clearances.

Clearances are valid for one year from date issued on the form.

Important note regarding out-of-state licensure/certification:

Bloomsburg University is approved to offer Education programs that lead to certification in Pennsylvania. While we regularly monitor licensure/certification laws in each state, state requirements are subject to change without notice. If you are interested in certification outside of Pennsylvania, we encourage you to contact the appropriate state licensing agency to seek guidance and verify requirements before beginning a program and during your program of study. Please visit http://intranet.bloomu.edu/state-authorization and https://www2.ed.gov/about/contacts/state/index.html for more information. If you are planning to teach in New Jersey, please note that you may be required to complete the edTPA, a performance based assessment. It is strongly recommended that you contact the school district(s) of interest and the New Jersey Department of Education for more information specific to New Jersey.
