Bloomsburg Sweeps Susquehanna in Baseball

BLOOMSBURG—Catcher Vinny James (Philadelphia/Bristol) went 6 for 7 in two games and shortstop Chris Husted (West Decatur/Philipsburg-Osceola) drove in seven runs in the opener to lead the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Susquehanna University on Sunday by scores of 13-4 and 7-3.

In the opener James went 3-4 with an RBI, while Husted went 4-4 with a career-high seven RBIs. Husted had a run-scoring single in the first inning, a two-run double in the third innings, a two-run homer in the fifth inning and capped his big game with a two-run single in the sixth inning.

Also hitting home runs for Bloomsburg in the game were Brian Tugend (Taylor/Riverside), who nailed a two-run shot in the sixth inning and Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp) with a solo shot, also in the sixth inning.

In all, the Huskies had 16 hits in game one to back the pitching of starter Paul Culbertson (Downingtown/Downingtown West), who won his first collegiate game and Jeff Withelder (Wallingford/Strath Haven), who pitched the final three innings.

In the nightcap, James went 3-3 with two runs scored and four RBI. The sophomore hit a two-run homer in the first inning and capped off his day by plating two more runs with a double in the fifth inning.

Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View) also had a big second game going 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Mike Akers (Muncy/Muncy) earned his second win of the week going the first six innings with Zach Weaver (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) pitching the seventh inning.

Bloomsburg improves to 14-20 with the sweep, while Susquehanna goes to 5-21-1.

The Huskies host East Stroudsburg on Friday at 1 p.m.
