Bloomsburg Drops Twinbill to Shippensburg

BLOOMSBURG —The Bloomsburg University baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end after dropping a twinbill to Shippensburg University on Wednesday by scores of 7-4 and 22-2.

In the opener the Huskies led 4-0 after four innings with the help of a solo homer and an RBI single from Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp) and RBI singles from Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View) and Brian Tugend (Taylor/Riverside).

The Red Raiders rallied and scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. The big hit for the Red Raiders in the fifth was a three-run homer from Chad Stecker, while in the fifth Scott Goss hit a two-run shot to give Shippensburg a 5-4 lead.

Wyland finished 2-4 in game one with two runs scored and two RBI.

In game two, the Huskies trailed 3-2 after three innings despite two run scoring singles from Chris Husted (West Decataur/Philipsburg-Osceola). The Red Raiders then scored two in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, Shippensburg scored 13 runs before the Huskies recorded an out. In all, Shippensburg sent 17 men to the plate with the big blows in the inning being a three-run homer from Tyler Wise and a solo homer from Jeremy Hess.

The Huskies fall to 18-21 with the losses, while Shippensburg improves to 27-22. Bloomsburg will be back in action on Friday at West Chester starting at 1 p.m. in a key PSAC Eastern Division matchup. The Huskies are tied for the third and final playoff spot in the East and need to sweep the Golden Rams this weekend to have any chance of reaching the conference playoffs.
