LOCK HAVEN —The Bloomsburg University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Lock Haven University on Saturday by scores of 2-1 and 3-2.
In the opener, the Huskies got both of their runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Andy Howard (Glen Rock/Dallastown) singled. After a fly out, Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) reached base on a infield single. Vinny James (Philadelphia/Bristol) then followed with a single to center scoring Howard with the first run of the game. Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp) then doubled to score Pesci with the second run for the Huskies.
Lock Haven got one run back in the home half of the sixth, but that was all as pitcher Corey Helfrich (Larksville/Wyoming Valley West) shut the door on the Bald Eagles. Helfrich surrendered just four hits in the game and fanned two.
In game two, Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second. The Huskies went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Evan Wickard (East Greenville/Upper Perkiomen) stroked a two-run single to score Billy Manning (Nazereth/Nazereth) and Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown). After Lock Haven tied the score in the bottom of the sixth, Bloomsburg scored the winning run in the top of the seventh.
Wyland started the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. He came home on a sacrifice fly by Bucher.
Bloomsburg pitched Casey Markey (York/Dallastown) then had to pitch out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win. Lock Haven led off the inning with a single with the runner moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, Markey got the next two batters to pop up to earn the win.
Bloomsburg, 6-11, will host Mansfield on Friday in a twinbill at 1 p.m.
