Bloomsburg Opens Baseball Trip To Florida
FT. MEYERS, FL —The Bloomsburg University baseball opened its annual trip to Florida with a win and three losses over the weekend.
The Huskies beat Indiana (PA) 16-3 on Saturday, then lost to IUP, 3-2, in game two. On Sunday, the Huskies lost to Slippery Rock, 5-1, and to Ashland University, 13-7.
In game one on Saturday against IUP, the Huskies Vinny James (Philadelphia/Bristol) went 4-4 with a triple and five RBI to back the strong pitching of Chase Phillips (Milton/Milton). James had a two run single in the first inning; an RBI single in the fifth and two-run triple in the sixth. Also, Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) was 3-4 with two doubles, while Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown) went 2-3 with a triple and two RBI.
Philips went six innings on the mound while striking out eight and not allowing a walk to earn the win.
In game two, the Huskies trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when with two outs Matt Robinson (York/Red Lion) singled and Mark Burch (Stroudsburg/Pocono Mountain) walked. Chris Husted (West Decataur/Philipsburg-Osceola) then singled scoring Robinson with the second run, while Burch stopped at third. Husted, though, got hung up between first and second and was tagged out to end the game.
In action on Sunday, the Huskies lost to Slippery Rock, 5-1. The Huskies wasted a strong pitching effort from Casey Markey (York/Dallastown) who went six innings, struckout two and did not allow a walk.
Evan Wickard (East Greenville/Upper Perkiomen) went 2-2 for the Huskies with an RBI.
Against Ashland University the Huskies lost by a 13-7 score. The Huskies trailed 7-2 going into the top of the fourth when they scored four runs to get within one at 7-6. However, Ashland scored two in the bottom of the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth to pull away.
Husted went 2-3 with a double and two RBI, while Matt Robinson was 2-3 with two stolen bases.
The Huskies, 1-8, are off on Monday and will face Charleston on Tuesday in a twinbill at 4 p.m.
