Bloomsburg Sweeps Pair of Games from East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG —The Bloomsburg University baseball team ran its winning streak to seven games with a sweep of its doubleheader with East Stroudsburg on Monday winning by scores of 3-0 and 7-1. The sweep puts Bloomsburg in a tie with Kutztown for the third and final playoff spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division.
In the opener, the Huskies took advantage of four East Stroudsburg errors to score their three runs. The Huskies got two runs in the top of the first. Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp) and Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View) both scored after reaching on errors. In the third, the Huskies got some insurance when Chris Husted (West Decataur/Philipsburg-Osceola) singled with one out. He later scored on the back-up of a double steal.
On the mound, pitcher Corey Helfrich (Larksville/Wyoming Valley West) tossed a complete-game three-hitter, while striking out nine.
In game two, the Huskies led 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning when Bloomsburg broke the game open with four runs. The big blow in the inning was a based loaded triple by Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) that scored three runs. Pesci later scored on a double off the bat of Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown).
Bloomsburg also got runs courtesy of an sacrifice fly from Vinny James and RBI singles from Billy Manning (Nazareth/Nazareth) and Matt Robinson (York/Red Lion).
Pitcher Casey Markey (York/Dallastown) also went the distance allowing six hits and one run.
Bloomsburg improves to 18-19 with the sweep and is now 8-8 in the PSAC Eastern Division. East Stroudsburg falls to 14-27, 3-13 in the PSAC East.
