Bloomsburg Sweeps East Stroudsburg in Baseball

BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University baseball team swept a pair of games against East Stroudsburg in a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
The Huskies shutout the Warriors, 5-0, in the first game behind a strong pitching performance from sophomore Chase Phillips (Milton/Milton). Phillips allowed only three hits and surrendered one walk, while striking out four in his second complete game shutout of the season.
Bloomsburg broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, started by a leadoff double off the bat of Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.). Wyland then advanced to third on a single by Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View). Vinny James (Philadelphia/Bristol) followed with another single that allowed Wyland to score and advanced Piccini to second. Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) then layed down a sacrifice bunt, but the Warriors overthrew first base, which allowed Wyland and Piccini to score, while Pesci advanced to third.
The Huskies tacked on a few insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run homerun by Wyland, his fourth of the year.
For the game, Wyland went 3-4 with two runs, two RBI, a double and a homerun. Vinny James was 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Piccini, Pesci, Josh Howe (Williamsport/Williamsport) and Jeremy Eck (Williamsport/Williamsport) all chipped in with a single apiece.
In game two, the Huskies got another strong pitching performance, this time from freshman Dave Rute (Milton/Milton). Rute pitched his second complete game of the season allowing one unearned run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
East Stroudsburg jumped out to the early lead with a run in the first inning. It wasn't until the fourth inning that Bloomsburg struck back to tie the game on a single by Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown). The Huskies added two runs in the fifth and two more in the six for the 5-1 win.
Brian Tugend (Taylor/Riverside) led the Huskies offensively, going 2-4 with a double and a triple, while scoring a run and knocking in another. Tugend, Piccini and Bucher each had a multi-hit game.
With the sweep, Bloomsburg improves to 16-19, 6-8 PSAC East, winning 10 of their last 11 games including five straight. The Huskies will travel to East Stroudsburg (14-25, 3-11 PSAC East) on Saturday to take on the Warriors in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
