Bloomsburg Sweeps Baseball Twinbill in Florida

FORT MYERS, FL —The Bloomsburg University baseball team swept a pair of games from the University of Charleston (WV) on Tuesday. The Huskies won by scores of 6-5 and 7-5 with pitcher Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp) getting a win in game one and a save in game two.

In the opener, the Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for the win. Vinny James (Philadelphia/Bristol) led off with a walk and was wild-pitched to second. After Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown) walked, both runners advanced on a passed ball. Andy Howard (Glen Rock/Dallastown) then bounced out to second with James scoring the tying run. Troy Smith (Dauphin/C.D. East) then put down a perfect suicide squeeze scoring Bucher with the go-ahead run.

Wyland got the win with 3 2/3 innings of relief. Matt Robinson (York/Red Lion) led the hitters by going two for four with a triple.

In game two, the Huskies scored six times over the first two innings to get the victory. In the top of the first, Robinson led off with a walk and moved to third after Brian Tugend (Taylor/Riverside) reached on an error. Chris Husted (West Decataur/Philipsburg-Osceola) then grounded out to shortstop scoring Robinson. Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) also had an RBI single, while Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View) had a two-run single later in the frame.

In the second inning the Huskies made it 6-0 when Husted slammed a two-run homer. Andy Gideon (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) got the win with 4 2/3 innings of work, while Wyland earned the save with 1 2/3 innings of relief work.

Pesci went 2-2 with an RBI, while Robinson was 2-3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored.

The Huskies, now 3-8, play Stonehill on Wednesday in a twinbill.
