Box Score-GAME TWO
WEST CHESTER The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a twinbill with West Chester on Saturday winning 3-0 and losing 7-6 in eight innings. The win was the 299th in the coaching career of Bloomsburg's Matt Haney. He will go for career win number 300 on Sunday in a twinbill against the University of Scranton at Lithwhiler Field.
In the opener, freshman Chase Phillips (Milton/Milton) scattered seven hits to pick up a shutout victory over the PSAC Eastern Division co-leaders. Phillips allowed a hit in all but one inning, but was able to escape trouble each time as West Chester left 10 men on base.
Phillips got all the offense he would need in the third inning when the Huskies scored three times. Fellow freshman Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.)hit a two-run, two out homer for the Huskies with Mark Reiter (Three Bridges, NJ/Hunterdon Central) following later in the inning with an RBI single.
West Chester's biggest scoring threat came in the fifth when they had the bases loaded, but Phillips was able to get out of the jam with a fly out to center.
Wyland finished 2-3 with two RBI, while Matt Robinson (York/Red Lion) was also 2-3.
In the nightcap, the Golden Rams scored with two outs in the eighth inning to earn the split. The winning run scored on a balk after two runners had reached on errors.
Bloomsburg trailed 4-0 in the game but rallied to tie with two runs in the fourth and four in the sixth. Wyland had an RBI single in the fourth for one run, while Robinson singled in the Huskies' second run.
In the sixth, the inning started with Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) and Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View) reaching base. After a pitching change, Wyland bounced into a force play with Pesci out at third. Andy Howard then doubled home Piccini, while Robinson singled home both Wyland and Howard for two runs before Chris Husted (West Decatur/Philipsburg-Osceola) singled home Robinson with the tying run.
The Huskies, 13-24, 4-11 PSAC East, were paced by Robinson's 3-4 with three RBI, while Husted was also 3-4 with one RBI. Bloomsburg will entertain the University of Scranton in a twinbill starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
