Bloomsburg Baseball Ends Spring Trip with Split

FT. MEYERS, FL—The Bloomsburg University baseball team ended its trip to Florida with a split of a twinbill with Southwest Minnesota State on Friday. The Huskies won game one 5-1 and dropped the nightcap by the same 5-1 score.

In game one, the Huskies scored all they would need in the first inning. After one was out in the top of the first, Chris Husted (West Decatur/Phillipsburg-Osceola) and Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) singled putting runners on first and second. After a failed pickoff attempt moved each runner up a base, Husted scored on a passed ball, while Pesci would later score on another failed pickoff attempt by the Mustangs' pitcher.

Bloomsburg's Jeff Whithelder (Wallingford/Strath Haven) threw six innings to earn the win with Chase Phillips (Milton/Milton) pitching the final inning.

In the nightcap, Southwest Minnesota State starter Pat O'Brien held the Huskies hitless for the first five and a third innings and went on to allow just two hits and one run. The Mustangs got one run in the top of the first and later scored four times in the fourth to put the game away. Mark Reiter (Three Bridges, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Vinnie James (Philadelphia/Bristol) were the only Huskies to hit safely in the game. Casey Markey (York/Dallastown) took the loss for the Huskies.

The Huskies finished their spring trip with a 7-5 mark. Bloomsburg, 8-9, will host Wilkes University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
