Box Score-GAME TWO
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a doubleheader with Millersville on Saturday, winning game one 7-6, and falling 8-5 in the second game.
In game one Bloomsburg's Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) provided heroics as he hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Bloomsburg the 7-6 victory.
The Huskies took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Pesci doubled in Aaron Wheeler (Summerville, SC/Summerville) with the Huskies' first run. Pesci scored later in the inning as Phil Guinto (Westville, NJ/West Deptford) drove him in on a single to leftfield.
Millersville scored two of their own in the fifth on a two run single by Steve Randolph. The Huskies responded in the bottom half of the inning, taking the 3-2 lead as Ryan Wyland (Williamsport/Loyalsock Township) scored on a double steal. In the top half of the sixth, the Marauders tied the game at 3-3 on a fielder's choice.
Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. In the extra frame, Millersville scored three runs of their own on a Mitch Schucck double as well as two Bloomsburg errors. After Jim Danforth (Corning, NY/Corning East) retired the side for Bloomsburg, Pesci and the Huskies would take the first game in dramatic fashion.
Chris Husted (West Decatur/Philipsburg-Osceola) started the rally in the bottom of the eighth with a double. After Brian Zorger (Altoona/Altoona) was hit by a pitch and Wheeler walked, Pesci took Matt Werts' 0-2 offering deep off of the leftfield scoreboard to lift the Huskies to a 7-6 PSAC Eastern Division victory.
Matt Funk (Emmaus/Emmaus) pitched a solid game for the Huskies, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing only three Millersville hits. Funk also struck out seven in the game. Danforth picked up his first win of the season in relief.
In the second game, Bloomsburg erased a 1-0 first inning deficit, scoring two; the first on a fielder's choice by Zorger and the second on a Wheeler single.
Millersville tied the score in the second, then scored three in the third to take a 5-2 lead. The Huskies closed the gap to 5-4 on a two-run homerun by Joe Pesci.
However, Millersville scored three of their own in the fifth. Bloomsburg could only score one in the sixth on a Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View) single to bring the score to 8-5. The Huskies had two on in the seventh but could not score, dropping the second game, 8-5
Joe Pesci had a solid day for the Huskies, going 6-8 with two homeruns, a double, and seven runs batted in. Aaron Wheeler had three hits on the day and also scored three runs.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, as they face Millersville on the road starting at 1:00 p.m.
