Bloomsburg Drops Pair of Games to Mansfield in Baseball

MANSFIELD —The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Mansfield on Sunday by scores of 3-2 and 6-4. The games were the final games of the season for the Huskies.

In game one, the Huskies trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning when Brian Zorger (Altoona/Altoona) and Larry Piccini (Jessup/Valley View) drew back-to-back walks. After moving up a base on a bunt, Andy Howard (Glen Rock/Dallastown) singled home both runners with a single to make it a 3-2 game. However, the Mountaineers got the next two outs to escape any further trouble.

Bloomsburg did get a runner on with one out in the top of the seventh, but could not get advance him home. The Huskies' Chase Phillips (Milton/Milton) took the loss despite allowing just seven hits.

In the nightcap, the Mansfield opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs. Bloomsburg cut the deficit in half by manufacturing a run in the top of the second. Joe Pesci (Levittown/Pennsbury) singled, moved up to second on a wild pitch, was sacrificed to third and scored on a ground out by Matt Robinson (York/Red Lion).

Mansfield scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead before the Huskies rallied in the fourth. In the fourth with one out, Brian Zorger singled. After a ground out advanced Zorger to second, the senior stole third and came home on a double by Robinson. Howard then homered to tie the game at 4-4.

The Mountaineers went ahead for good with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the firth.

Bloomsburg loaded the bases in the top of seventh with two outs, but Mansfield got a ground out to end the threat.

The Huskies end the season with a record of 14-29, 4-15 in the PSAC East. Mansfield goes to 31-17, 16-4 in the PSAC East.
