Bloomsburg Wins 2004 Season Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, VA—The Bloomsburg University baseball team won its season opener downing the Apprentice School, 9-8, Thursday night.

After spotting the Builders a 6-0 lead after two innings, the Huskies tied the score with six runs in the third inning. Junior Joe Pesci and Troy Smith had RBI singles in the innings, while Dan Adamo squeezed home another run in the inning.

In the fourth inning, The Apprentice School regained the lead at 8-6 before the Huskies were able to come back one more time.

In the top half of the fifth, the Huskies scored three times with Smith ripping a two-run single to tie the game. Smith then scored the go-ahead run when Mark Reiter reached on an error by the pitcher.

Smith finished 3-4 with three runs scored, while Aaron Wheeler was 3-3 with an RBI.

Bloomsburg's Corey Helfrich picked up the win with an inning and a third of relief with Andy Gideon earning the save.

The Apprentice School was led by Brooks Elks who was 2-2 with three runs scored.

The Huskies face East Stroudsburg Friday at 2 p.m.
