Bloomsburg Splits with Shippensburg in BaseballBLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team split with Shippensburg on Saturday in college baseball action. The Huskies won the opener, 5-1, and dropped the nightcap, 13-6. In the opener Brian Martin's three-run homer in the first inning backed the three-hit pitching of Mike Robertson to lead the Huskies to a 5-1 win. After Nick Stachokus walked to lead off the inning the next two hitters went down before Brian Zorger reached on a error. Martin then delivered a three-run homer to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead. The home run was the first of the year for Martin. After the Red Raiders got one back in the top half of the fourth inning, the Huskies put the game away with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two out Chris Husted singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Brian Sperling then singled for an RBI. Zorger was hit by a pitch, which moved Sperling to second. Martin then singled to score Sperling with the fifth run. Robertson retired the final nine batters he faced on his way to his first complete game of the year. In game two, the Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Jeremy Arner had an RBI single in the inning, while Mark Reiter plated another run with a sacrifice fly. Two other runs scored on errors by the Red Raiders. Shippensburg got three back in the top half of the third before the Huskies went up 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the third. Arner drew a bases loaded walk to force in Husted who walked. Shippensburg made it 5-4 with a run in the top of the fourth and took the lead for good with there runs in the fifth. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single by Matt DeSanto. Shippensburg tacked on four more in the sixth and two more in the seventh to win going away, 12-6. Husted finished game two, 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Arner was 2-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Bloomsburg, 12-12, 1-4 in the PSAC East, will visit Mansfield in a makeup doubleheader Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. |
