Bloomsburg Wins The Apprentice School Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, VA—The Bloomsburg University baseball team won the Apprentice School Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 9-4 win over Kutztown University.

Bloomsburg and Kutztown were tied 2-2 going into the top of the seventh inning when the Huskies went ahead for good by putting three runs on the board.

Andy Howard started the inning with a triple and scored on a triple by Jim Coombe. Brian Sperling then followed with a single that scored Coombe to make it 4-2 Bloomsburg. Brian Zorger then worked a walk and a pitch to load the bases hit Brian Martin. Sperling then scored on a teal of home after a pickoff attempt at second base to make it 5-2 Bloomsburg.

The Huskies put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning by scoring four times. The big blow in the inning was a bases loaded double by Zorger.

Rob Jewett was the winning pitcher for the Huskies going three innings in relief of Kurt Bidermann. Jewett struckout three and walked two and allowed one earned run for the victory.

Zorger finished 2-3 with three RBI, while Coombe was 2-5 with two RBI.

Bloomsburg, 3-1, will be back in action March 7th against St. Anselm in Brandenton, Florida.
