Bloomsburg Drops Two in Florida OpenerBRADENTON, FLThe Bloomsburg University baseball team began its annual spring break trip to Florida with two tough losses. The Huskies lost to St. Anselm, 3-1, then fell 1-0 in eight innings to Saginaw Valley. In the opener against St. Anselm, the Huskies fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but tied the score in the home half of the inning. Mark Reiter led off with a single and moved to third when Andy Howard reached on an error. After the Huskies hit in a double play with Reiter having to hold a third, the team's centerfielder stole home on a 1-2 pitch to Brian Zorger. That would be the only run of the game for Bloomsburg. St. Anselm tacked on single runs in both the third and fifth to lead 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies loaded the bases with two outs, but Nick Stachokus grounded out to third unassisted to end the game. Jim Coombe went 5 2/3 innings for the Huskies and took the loss. In game two, senior Matt Wiltrout tossed a seven-inning no-hitter, only to see Saginaw Valley pitcher Ryan Reid keep the Huskies off the scoreboard as well. Wiltrout, who went 4-4 a year ago with a 3.77 ERA, struckout two and walked three, but was pulled by head coach Matt Haney in the eighth due to the heat and a high pitch count. Bloomsburg got a leadoff double in the top of the fifth from Joe Pesci, but the junior was left stranded. In the top of the eighth, the Huskies got a one out single from Stefan Mueller. After Mark Reiter reached on a fielder's choice, Reiter was caught stealing to end the inning. Saginaw Valley won the game in the bottom of the eighth when Rob Jewett, on in relief of Wiltrout, walked two and hit one batter to lead the bases with no outs. Saginaw Valley then tried a suicide squeeze, but the lead runner was out at home on the play. After Bloomsburg intentionally walked a batter to reload the bases, Eric Caldwell laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to bring home the winning run. Bloomsburg, 3-3, will face Indiana (PA) and Slippery Rock on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
