February 20, 2003 Bloomsburg Wins 2003 Season OpenerNEWPORT NEWS, VAThe Bloomsburg University baseball team won its season opener downing the Apprentice School, 6-3, Thursday night. The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Jeremy Arner singled and David Manter reached on an error while attempting to sacrifice. After Mark Reiter sacrificed the runners to second and third for out number one, Andy Howard bounced out to shortstop for out number two. Jim Coombe then walked to load the bases when Brian Sperling then singled home two runs. After Apprentice tied the score in the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with four runs. The Huskies got singles from Coombe and Sperling with Brian Martin getting hit by pitch to load the bases. Tim Kelleher then singled home one run for a 3-2 lead. Joe Pesci then followed with an RBI single with Jeremy Arner getting a bases loaded walk for another run. Brian Martin then finished off the scoring by getting an RBI ground out scoring Kelleher with the sixth run. Charlie Reed picked up the win with two innings of work in relief of Mike Robertson with Mike Vavra getting the save with a perfect one inning of work. The Huskies face Eastern Mennonite Friday at 2 p.m.
