The university on the hill

A sense of tranquility and security surrounds BU's 282-acre campus. Ask students about the deciding factor to apply to BU and most will say it's the beautiful campus.

BU's campus overlooks the Town of Bloomsburg and is situated a few hundred yards from the community's business district. The Bloomsburg Hospital is across the street from a cluster of residence halls.

Campus walkway

Lower campus features seven residence halls, a student services center, campus dining, instructional buildings, library and recreational and social facilities. Upper campus, about a half-mile away and connected by continuous shuttle service, features athletic facilities, three university-owned student apartment complexes and several maintenance facilities.

Residence halls

Clustered in a group toward Town on the south end of campus, walking distance from shopping, several banks and local restaurants. Students are generally paired in a room (same gender). Dorms are co-ed, have 24-hour front desk security and all rooms are protected by sprinklers and hard-wired smoke detectors. Rooms include ethernet connections to BU's computer network, telephone and cable television. Each hall has laundry and kitchen facilities, as well as student lounges and study areas.

The residence halls are located near the busy student union, four campus dining facilities including the primary food service outlet, bookstore and an entire building for student services. A professionally-staffed health center is located in the union, and a full-time police department is headquartered in the bookstore building.

McCormick Center

Academic buildings

Eight large instructional buildings offer modern classrooms and laboratories, meeting rooms and academic computer labs. Most faculty offices are located in the instructional buildings, which are grouped primarily around the Academic Quad in the center of campus. Among them is an arts center with a 1,900-seat auditorium. Hartline Science Center recently doubled in size, McCormick Center was expanded, and the quad renovated to eliminate a parking lot and extend the green space.

On the north end of lower campus, Andruss Library and the Student Recreation Center, are two campus magnets of student activity and socialization. In addition to nearly 500,000 volumes, the library offers many study areas and meeting rooms, more than 200 computer work stations and subscriptions to a wide array of electronic journals (the library can be accessed from anywhere via the university network).

Kehr Union Walkway

"The Rec"

It offers students a complete fitness center and weight rooms, aerobics, racquetball courts, and a five-court basketball and volleyball arena. The 78,000-square foot facility was recently expanded to boost its size by 30 percent. It also hosts most of the 18 intramural sports programs at BU.

Also on campus is the president's residence, Buckalew Place, alumni association offices and maintenance and heating facilities. Magee Center, used for conferences, is located on West Main Street in Bloomsburg.

Upper Campus

The home of BU's Huskies athletic programs, which include 18 NCAA teams, is surrounded by the Nelson Field House, Redman Stadium and fields for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey, baseball and softball and a new tennis center.

Also on the upper campus are three university-owned apartment complexes, Jessica S. Kozloff Apartments, Montgomery Place and Mount Olympus, as well as the upscale dining and conference facility, Monty's.
